Open to any adult (18+) experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, or other life difficulties. No referral, insurance, or documentation required. Completely free.
About this resource
Amistad has been a cornerstone of Portland's peer support community since 1982. It is Maine's largest peer-run organization, providing a safe, welcoming space for adults experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, homelessness, and other life difficulties. The center operates as a drop-in model where people can access peer support, hot meals, basic needs (showers, laundry, lockers, mail service), groups, and recovery-focused programming.

What to expect
Walk in during open hours. The environment is informal and peer-led. No clinical appointments or intake forms. You can access a meal, use facilities, join a group, or just have a conversation. Staff and peers are there to support, not evaluate.
